REBUILDING THE FAMILY ALTAR
Simple, Powerful Ways to Draw Your Family Closer to God — and Closer to Each Other
In a world filled with noise, screens, packed schedules, and endless distractions, many homes are longing for something deeper: peace, connection, and the presence of God. Often, René and I look into the eyes of sincere, weary parents who ask with deep concern, “How can we have family worship in a way that truly holds our children’s attention and reaches their hearts?” We often assume family worship is mainly about reading a passage, singing a hymn, and offering prayer. While those elements matter, research and experience show that the most powerful family worships are not always the longest or most polished—they are the most relational.
The prophet Malachi foretold that before Christ’s return, God would send an “Elijah message” that would “turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers” (Malachi 4:5, 6). Jesus added that Elijah would “restore all things” (Matthew 17:11). One of the first places God wants to bring restoration is the home. “The restoration and uplifting of humanity begins in the home.” – Ministry of Healing, pg. 349
Today, many family altars need rebuilding. We may have time for screens, phones, and social media, yet little time to gather in the family circle with Jesus. But the good news is that family worship does not need to be complicated. It can become one of the happiest and most healing parts of the day.
A major study on family worship at Andrews University discovered three especially powerful methods for drawing families closer to God and to one another.
1. Relational Self-Disclosure — “I Know You”
This was found to be the strongest factor. In simple terms, it means opening the heart.
During worship, invite family members to share:
- What was the best part of your day?
- What was difficult today?
- What are you thankful for?
- How can we pray for you?
- What does God mean to you right now?
Children especially need to know they are seen, heard, and understood. Sometimes a five-minute honest conversation can do more than a thirty-minute sermon.
2. Affirmation — “I Love You”
The second most powerful element was affirmation. Homes flourish where appreciation is spoken.
Use worship time to:
- Thank a child for kindness shown that day
- Compliment a spouse’s patience or faithfulness
- Share a happy family memory
- Say “I love you” often
- Offer hugs, smiles, and encouragement
Many people remember less about what was read in worship and more about how they felt in those sacred moments.
3. Prayer — “I Am Here for You”
The third powerful method was prayer— not rushed, formal prayer, but connected prayer.
Try:
- Praying around the circle
- Sentence prayers
- Holding hands while praying
- Praying morning and evening
- Mentioning each family member by name
- Writing down prayer requests and answered prayers
Prayer teaches children that God is not distant—He is part of daily family life.
Keep It Simple and Joyful
Family worship does not need to be perfect to be powerful. Keep it short, warm, and consistent. Sing a song. Read a few verses. Share hearts. Pray together. Some nights may feel meaningful; others may feel messy. Keep going.
The family altar alters the family.
As hearts turn toward one another, they also turn toward God. And in a divided world, that may be one of the greatest miracles of all.
