Words of Life
Three words changed my life forever.
Do you want to guess what they were?
You guessed it: “I love you.”
I was sitting in the staff room, early one morning, and I received a piece of paper in my hand. I unfolded it and read those three words: “I love you.”
Do you want to guess who wrote them? You guessed it, again. Yes, those were René’s words (we were unmarried at the time).
“I love you.”
Three words were just starring back at me from the note sitting in my hands in the staff room, early one morning. Now, for some people those words are no big deal, but for me those words were life, they were hope, they were peace, and they were healing. It was like I was a rock-hard dry sponge, and those words were water.
The laws of physics tell us that water on a rock-hard dry sponge is not absorbed right away. Slowly the sponge softens and is eventually saturated in water, and that was certainly true for me. I wasn’t used to hearing words like that, so although I was changed by those words, it took time for their full impact to completely saturate my heart.
Why did it take so long? Because I had to get rid of other words that were filling my mind and replace them with these words of love from René. We have been married for almost 25 years now, but to begin with, those words had to get past all my barriers and filters before I could fully trust them and just relax in my wife’s words of love.
Now, if René’s words could make such a powerful impact on my life, how much more powerfully can the words of God impact your life? The words of God are more powerful than the words of your parents, friends, siblings, aunts, uncles, neighbours, teachers, or strangers.
Look at these words from the Bible: “For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God” (1 Peter 1:23 NIV). God’s words are full of truth, and if you fully trust them, they are full of life.
“It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life” (John 6:63 NKJV). To hear God’s words, to understand God’s words we need to be still (Psalm 46:10), and this is a challenge for us because we live in a world of intensity. God does not shout or force His words into your head; He uses a still small voice.
In the midst of an intense experience of fasting, praying, and being tempted in the wilderness, Jesus affirmed His faith in the word of His Father when He stated, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God’ ” (Matthew 4:4). Not only Jesus, but we also live by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God. This is because “…the only thing in our world upon which we can rely is the word of God” (The Desire of Ages, pg. 121).
